Karslborg

Karlsborg

On August 11, 1819, King Carl XIV made a decisive decision:
“…a fortress shall be established in Västergötland at Vanäs on the shores of Lake Vättern.”

The fortress was initially named Vanäs but was renamed Carlsborg in 1832, now known as Karlsborg. In peacetime, military supplies were stored in the fortress. In times of war, it was designated as the safe haven for the royal family, the government, the Riksbank’s gold reserves, and the crown jewels—earning Karlsborg the title of Sweden’s Reserve Capital.

But Karlsborg is more than just its fortress; it is also a spectacular destination where Lake Vättern and, of course, the Göta Canal play a central role in its vibrant tourism, recreation, and fishing culture. Nearby, the enchanting wilderness of Tiveden and the historic industrial village of Forsvik are just a few of the hidden gems waiting to be explored.
